Oh boy – back to the vet – again.

Ruff weekend here.

Saturday night Achilles wouldn’t/couldn’t keep anything down – pedialite, food, water nothing. I even tried just an ounce of fluid or an ounce of food – even that he’s throwing back up.

If only we can get him to keep some food down i think we”ll make it over this big bump in the road!

This morning (Monday Oct 18, 2010) I took him back to the vet to run bloodwork and get some fluids in him.

The bloodwork looks “good” –  blood levels are still low – that’s the same

the kidney number is now 12 – last Thursday it was 13.2 (normal is 1.8)

so, while it’s not good, we are still in the game!

Dr. is tossing around the idea of a feeding tube to bypass the stomach just to keep some nutrition in him. Achilles will still have the option to eat if/when he wants to, and we”ll be able to make sure he gets food and keeps it down.

Keeping our paws crossed. We don’t want to drag this out indefinitely for Achilles. If he chooses to quit, I will certainly let him, but so far he really seems to want to fight. So we’re going with it.

some pictures. I am still figuring out this posting stuff. Hopefully it works.

  1. Wow…at least you’re keeping upbeat for him! Tough, tough. Is this problem caused by the pain meds…gave him ulcers & affected his liver numbers?

Glad he’s still wanting to fight…as well as you!

    Thinking of you…

  2. Sorry to hear the kidney issues are continuing. My pug Maggie dealt with kidney failure too. You should check out a Yahoo group called K9kidneys, I think, I’ll check when I get home. You can also PM me (krun15) if you want to and I can send you what I know.

  3. @ maggie
I think the meds had a lot to do with it = Achilles was on pain meds July- end of Sept. the bloodwork was good though presurgury – or we wouldn’t have gone through with it. ulcer showed up right after, then that week the kidneys started going bad…. It’s been a wild ride. He’s a tough kid – hoping he’ll get through this one. 🙂
    Chin up!

  4. Look at all the white fluffy throws you have all over the floor and the sofa….oooooh….those are dogs!

Hang in there. Sure hope his kidneys get better. Wishing you a smoother time ahead.

  7. Come on, Achilles! As several others have said, keep on fighting.

And that is a LOT of big white fluffies. A beautiful sight.

  8. So sorry to hear of this setback. What a big beautiful cottonball boy! We will be sending Achilles lots of golden hugs and healing thoughts. Let us know how he’s doing. Let us know how you’re doing….we’re here for you.

  9. Achilles, keep on fighting the great fight. Once while all of us were at Yellowstone, I got REAL sick and could not keep anything down myself. After the vet gave me some four hydration packs and some super drugs, he would only let Dad let me have Ice Cubes. The vet explained that more of the moisture would be absorbed before it made it to the stomach. Not sure just how that works, but I immediately got better and stopped throwing up everything. BTW – we are sure that this is the same vet that Jerry saw a few years later in the Yellowstone area.

Anyway, we are all pulling for you and we will be saying a prayer.

  10. Come on Achilles!! You can do it. This is the tough part, but once this is over, it gets so easy.

It does look like a room full of cotton balls. Beautiful!

We’ll be thinking happy thoughts for you.
